Newsflash: Sneakers are now a luxury item

There’s something brewing in the fashion world. Something many thought would never be a high fashion statement. But then again, it’s 2014 and the fashion world is always coming up with the next big thing.

Sneakers. Yes, sneakers are actually in style and are now becoming a fashion statement. It all started back in 2009, but only now has it hit really big.

In Paris, the Mecca of high fashion, there is a shoe store where a wall of sneakers is now a semi-permanent display, showing off limited edition kicks to tricked-out Vans.

These aren’t those average white sneakers you wore to gym class or on a sightseeing tour during your summer vacation. These come in various colors, styles and textures, are studded, adorned with gold or silver, semi-precious stones, and even diamonds.

Luxury labels such as Nike, Adidas, Givenchy, Puma, Ferrari and Gucci are coming out with their own lines of luxury sneakers, costing trend-loyal fashionistas $100 and as much as $30.00 per pair.

According to Style Arabia, “Designers seem to be fascinated with sneakers at the moment. In ready-to-wear, this phenomenon is already a trend, and some major brands already brought sneakers to the runway some time ago. Fashion houses like Givenchy, Kenzo and Maison Martin Margiela are known for their method of breaking sartorial chic with chunky, colorful sneakers that add a ‘gang’-like, sporty touch to their collections.”

Think they’re just for boys? Wrong. Girls are also sporting new platform sneakers.

According to an article on the NYTimes, “thanks largely to editorials in men’s fashion magazines — GQ [declared] high fashion sneakers a ‘full-on invasion’.”
